A room of one's own

I cannot believe I did not see the connection myself! When an article by Ragnhild Lund spelled it out for me, it was a lightning strike: The theory of an interlanguage is not much different from Homi Bhabhas vision of a "third space" between two meeting cultures.

This was also a wake up call for my treatment of my thesis subject. I need to see language training not as mastering a limited system of words, but as finding one's place in a complex world of language, culture and knowledge.

(The tongue-in-cheek connection to feminist literature is just a clever disguise of my distress. The status of the female as second sex versus the status of interlanguage as a secondary language is not a discussion I will enter at this point).
